Pierre Dancosse (1643–1697): Proof of Origins

frAussi disponible en français.

Exceptionally for 1670s Québec, no marriage record or contract has been located for Pierre Dancosse (1643–1697), one of the earliest pioneers at Rivière-Ouelle, Québec, Canada.1 This lack of documentation leaves us with unanswered questions about his parents' identity. Until now, the first clear reference to Pierre Dancosse has been his indentured servitude contract of 17 June 1662. It specifies his age (18), suggesting he was born in 1643 or 1644, his place of origin (La Rochelle), and his stepfather (Jean Marchand). Perron found a baptismal record in Brouage in 1643, but could not establish a concrete link.2 3 WikiTree contributors suggest the possibility that his stepfather is the father of pioneer Jean Marchand, husband of Marie Hayot, who was also from La Rochelle (specifically, Saint-Sauveur Parish), and who served as the godfather of Pierre's first daughter.4 5 6 7

Unfortunately for us, the parish registers of Saint-Sauveur in La Rochelle have a gap of about thirty years, when pioneers Pierre Dancosse and Jean Marchand would have lived in La Rochelle.8 Can the registers in La Rochelle from after Pierre Dancosse's emigration provide us with evidence to confirm these hypotheses proposed by Perron and the WikiTree contributors?

The Dancosses in Brouage

Our inquiry begins in Brouage. This village, in the same department as La Rochelle, has historical links with New France due to famous explorer Samuel de Champlain, who hailed from there.9 The record that Perron identifies describes a Pierre d'Encosse, son of Anthoine and Gabriel[le] Porchereau, baptized during the anticipated time window of our Pierre's birth.

The parents of this Pierre married in 1639 in Brouage, but under the names Danscaust and Fouchereau. Unfortunately, their marriage record reveals neither the parents nor the places of origin of the spouses.

Pierre does not appear to be their first child. An older baptismal record is found for a daughter Gabriel[le] in 1640. Note that the spellings of the mother's and daughter's first names are identical.

Gabriel[le] d'Ancos baptism Gabriel[le] d'Ancos baptism (19 September 1640),12 Archives départementales de la Charente-Maritime (etalab-2.0)

Antoine and Gabrielle (mother) had at least three godchildren baptized in Brouage:

  1. Gabriel[l]e Mediou (15 April 1634), godmother Gabriele Fouchereau.13
  2. Johan [Jean] Cormier (14 September 1636), godmother Gabrielle Fouchereau.14
  3. Antoine Guayrine (2 April 1643), godfather Antoine Dancosse, godmother Gabrielle Madiou (perhaps his wife's goddaughter?).15

After 1643, we lose the trail of this family in Brouage. If this family is the same as that of our Pierre Dancosse, we would expect to find mentions of these individuals, particularly the mother and daughter Gabrielle, in La Rochelle after they moved there.

Gabrielle Dancosse

A Gabrielle Dancosse first appears in La Rochelle in 1666, as the godmother of Gabrielle Pinsard. With no mention of a husband or her marital status, we cannot establish if she is single or married at that time.16 We find her again in 1675. Widow of Girard La Roque, surgeon, she marries Pierre Thomas, marchand cabaretier (merchant/pub proprietor). Among the witnesses, we note a Jean Marchand. Could this be the same as Pierre's stepfather?

Her prior husband had died in 1673 at the age of 40. The record does not specify the witnesses, but one of the signatures is that of a certain "Faudry."18 Pierre Thomas died in 1680 at the age of 72,19 and, after almost six months, Gabrielle remarried Jean Ducart, also a merchant. Due to the loss of the municipal copy of the register, we cannot examine the signatures on the record, but we discover two of the bride's other relatives: Michel Tichon, cousin, and Vincent Charles, brother-in-law.

Gabrielle died in 1695 at the age of 55, the age that the Gabrielle of Brouage would have reached later that year. Her burial was attended by Vincan [Vincent] Charles (her brother-in-law according to the 1680 marriage record) and by two others: M. Bouyer and Jean Charles.

She had at least five other godchildren, all in La Rochelle, except the last, baptized in Dompierre-sur-Mer:

  1. Gabrielle Billaud (19 February 1682).22
  2. Pierre Garnier (7 March 1684).23
  3. Catherine Voyneau (19 March 1684).24
  4. René Regnier (25 March 1689).25
  5. Pierre Buffandeau (7 May 1691).26

Even though no baptismal records were found for children of Gabrielle, it is still possible she had a child during the gap in the Saint-Sauveur Parish registers,8 the time window in which we would undoubtedly have found her marriage record with Girard La Roque. With a wealth of references in the registers in La Rochelle and at least one connection to a Marchand, we turn next to studying the family of pioneer Jean Marchand to build a more extensive network of relationships.

The Marchands in La Rochelle

While the mother of pioneer Jean Marchand is recorded as Catherine Chorais in Québec,6 7 Godbout identifies her as "Mathurine Chauray, Chorré[, or] Chauroy" based on the records he located in La Rochelle.27

In 1669, we find the marriage of Joseph Massé, from Chassenon in Poitou, with 25-year-old Marie Marchand or Marchant, "fille de Jean Marchand fillassier et de defunte Mathurine Chauvray sa femme" (daughter of Jean Marchand, textile fiber worker, and of the late Mathurine Chauvray, his wife).

Her husband Joseph died in 1676, his burial being attended by, among others, his father-in-law Jean Marchand, and his brother-in-law Pierre Faudrit, whose signature "Faudry" is identical to the one found in the burial record of Girard Larogue [La Roque] above.29 18 Marie remarried Anthoine Girard in 1678.

In 1706 in Québec, we find a marriage contract between Jean Gabourit and "Marie Marchand veuve de deffunct Jean Labe" (Marie Marchand, widow of the late Jean Labe).33 If this contract does not definitively confirm she is the same person, another marriage contract entered in 1707 in Québec between Honoré Martel and "Marie Marchand veuve la premiere nopes de deffunct Joseph Massé et en secondes de deffunct Jean Labé" (Marie Marchand, widow first of the late Joseph Massé, and second of the late Jean Labé), reassures us of this with two corresponding husbands.34 Even though the contracts and her marriage record with Honoré Martel do not state her place of origin,35 Fichier Origine had already identified her place of origin as La Rochelle, but not her parentage.36 With the chain of all of her marriages, we now understand she belongs to this family.

Marie had six children, all baptized at Notre-Dame Parish in La Rochelle:

  1. Joseph Massay (1 March 1671), godfather Giraud [Girard] La Roque, surgeon (who would be Gabrielle Dancosse's husband);37 married Marie Landois (14 January 1692).38
  2. Pierre Maçé (23 April 1673).39
  3. François Maçé (30 August 1675).
  4. Marie Maçé (30 August 1675).40
  5. Susanne Girard (21 July 1680).41
  6. Anthoine Labé (23 April 1684).42

Godbout identifies two sisters married in La Rochelle.27 The first of these is Françoise, who married Pierre Faudry in 1672, revealing the identity behind the signature "Faudry." Their marriage record does not clearly indicate the witnesses, but among the signatures we find one beginning with "Laroque," undoubtedly Girard La Roque, as the same signature is found under the baptismal record of Joseph Massay [Massé].43

The other identified sister is Madeleine, who married Pierre Danyau in 1676, the marriage being witnessed by Pierre Thomas and others.

Pierre Danyau and Magdeleine Marchand marriage Pierre Danyau and Magdeleine Marchand marriage (7 March 1676),44 Archives départementales de la Charente-Maritime (etalab-2.0)

So far, we have already identified five La Rochelle records where a relative of Jean Marchand is associated with a husband of the Gabrielle Dancosse of La Rochelle, but none of these records reveals the exact relationship between these families. With more in-depth research, can we conclusively establish the exact relationship between Gabrielle and the sisters of the pioneer Jean Marchand, or find proof of a marriage between Jean Marchand (father) and Gabrielle Fouchereau that has eluded us?

Gabrielle Fouchereau

The marriage record between Pierre and Magdeleine [Madeleine] is not the only record in the registers that year for this couple. A month and a half before their marriage, they baptized an illegitimate daughter, Marguerite, whose father was declared by "Jean Marchand et sa femme [...] Gabrielle Fouchereau" (Jean Marchand and his wife [...] Gabrielle Fouchereau). Later in the record, the child's mother is listed as "Magdelene Marchand fille dudit Jean Marchand et de Marguerite Choré" (Magdelene Marchand, daughter of the said Jean Marchand and of Marguerite Choré). We now have a clear statement that Choré and Fouchereau were the wives of the same Jean Marchand. We can disregard the erroneous first name attributed to Choré, as her daughter Magdeleine [Madeleine]'s marriage record correctly states it as Mathurine shortly after.44

Marguerite Daniau baptism Marguerite Daniau baptism (19 January 1676),45 Archives départementales de la Charente-Maritime (etalab-2.0)

In 1688, we find a marriage between Mathurin Bouyer and Margueritte Marchand, "fille de deffunct Jean Marchand Et de Gabrielle Fouchereau sa femme" (daughter of the late Jean Marchand and of Gabrielle Fouchereau, his wife). Among the witnesses, we find Vincent Charles, brother-in-law of the bride, and among the signatures a "J. Ducart."

Mathurin Bouyer and Margueritte Marchand marriage Mathurin Bouyer and Margueritte Marchand marriage (23 February 1688),46 Archives départementales de la Charente-Maritime (etalab-2.0)

If this Gabrielle Fouchereau is the same as the mother of Gabrielle Dancosse, one would hope to verify this with a statement that Gabrielle Dancosse was a half- or step-sister of one of the children of father Jean Marchand, or her spouse was brother-in-law to one of the children or their spouses. Fortunately, we find the marriage record of Vincent Charles and Charlote Marchant in 1679, in the presence of "Pierre Thomas Marchant beau frere de lepouse" (Pierre Thomas, merchant, brother-in-law of the bride) and others. Unfortunately, this record does not mention the name of Charlote's mother; nevertheless, Charlote's age at her marriage (18) suggests that she is also Gabrielle Fouchereau's daughter.

Gabrielle Fouchereau had at least one goddaughter in La Rochelle, Marguerite Poirault (25 March 1672).48 She died a widow in 1686 under the name "Bouchereau," her burial record signed by, among others, "J. Ducart" and "Charles."

Conclusion

Having established that Gabrielle Dancosse and Gabrielle Fouchereau are the stepdaughter and wife, respectively, of the Jean Marchand whom Godbout identified as the father of pioneer Jean Marchand, we can conclude that the baptismal record of Pierre d'Encosse in Brouage in 1643 is indeed that of our ancestor. With the new proven relationship with pioneer Marie Marchand, wife of Honoré Martel, we can now see the Marchands and the Dancosses as one blended, transatlantic family. However, this conclusion is not the end of our inquiry. Pierre would not be the only Brouage pioneer related to a Fouchereau—there was another, Jean Fouchereau, in 1644.50 51 Are they related?

Brouage was still a young town in the first half of the 17th Century.52 Are the Dancosses and the Fouchereaus originally from another French province, or even another country, like the Mivilles, who lived in Brouage at the same time?53 These questions remain open to further research, perhaps by examining the notarial records that survive from Brouage and La Rochelle.
